You’re not good enough!
YOU’RE NOT MEANT TO DO IT ALL IN YOUR CREATIVE BUSINESS
If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed in your creative business, you’ve probably been thinking that you’re not good enough or that you’re unable to manage all the tasks that an online business requires.
I know because like many small business owners, I’ve been there.
In this article, you’ll learn why trying to do it all is not only impossible, it’s setting you up for burnout, and how to run your business with more ease, simple and calm.
You’re Not Enough. And That’s Okay.
Have you ever felt like you’re not enough in your creative business? Maybe you feel that you’re not skilled enough, not productive enough, not organised enough…
Well, you’re not imagining it.
Because the truth is… you’re not. And I promise you, I’m not trying to insult you. Because when you finally realise that as a solo person, you are not enough, it is in fact a gift.
Let me explain
Creative Entrepreneurs Are Doing Too Much
Let me ask you this: when you started this online business journey, did you sign up to be a social manager? An email marketer? An SEO strategist? A website designer? A Pinterest pro? A Google Analytics expert?
The answer is probably not.
You started your business because you wanted to do your craft, full stop.
You wanted to create. Make, build, style, teach, write, draw, paint, sing, perform, inspire, educate, whatever it is that you do, you wanted to share your passion through your craft and turn it into a business that would make you get paid for it.
What you didn’t expect is that somewhere along the way, you gained extra jobs. You now run your social media accounts, create your own website or set up an Etsy shop, you need to master SEO and do this and do that. The list is endless. It’s like you became a one-person marketing department, and you barely have any space left to nurture and express your creativity.
What if I told you that it was never meant to be this way?
That all the things you do in your business were never designed to be a single-person job?
Doing it all is a myth that needs busting
Big businesses hire entire teams to do what you’re doing solo. Imagine having a marketing director, a team of talented content strategists and creators, an expert web designer and copywriter, a professional photographer, a team of SEO wizards and a sales and customer service department.
You? You’re doing it all yourself, often from your kitchen table, between naps or client calls.
No wonder you're exhausted.
So really, if you find it impossible to juggle all the tasks, if you feel that you’re not good enough to strategise your online success, create your own website, write compelling content, take your own pictures, stay on top of traffic on top of doing your actually work…
Turns out you’re just human. And the sooner you accept that you are, indeed, not good enough to do all these things, the better. Because otherwise you’ll keep on trying and experience burnout after burnout, lose the joy to create and begin to loathe what you do.
nobody is good enough to diy their whole business
Don’t trust what you see on social media. I’ve worked with hundreds of sole traders and small business owners, and I can tell you that I have yet to find one that can comfortably do all of the things, jobs, tasks, stuff, whatever it is, and not be compromising somewhere else.
Whether that’s their family life, their health, their happiness, their social life… no one can do everything.
And if it seems like someone is doing everything seamlessly on their own, remember that you only see a very small portion of their lives online. It’s a highlight reel of their best bits, not a true representation of what’s actually going on in their business or their lives.
It’s a reality check. You’re not a highly trained team of people. You’re one person, doing the best you can to bring your creative work to people who need it.
So what if you gave yourself permission to be just that one person? One creative, soulful human doing your best? What if you let go of the pressure to be amazing at everything?
Because here’s the truth: you are enough for what matters. You’re just not supposed to carry it all alone.
